Autumn Term 2

I hope you have all enjoyed your week and are feeling refreshed and ready to learn.

This term we are continuing our topic work on the Vikings with a particular focus on Viking trade. We will be looking at viking inventions and recreating our own Viking version of ‘Dragon’s Den’. You will get the chance to work as a group to sell a viking artifact to our own team of fierce dragons. Fingers crossed you’ll strike a deal!

In maths we are looking at numbers with a focus on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will be using our knowledge from last term to help us to learn formal calculation methods. With a bit of practice we’ll be Masters of Calculation by Christmas. There will be a larger focus on our times tables with a focus on our 6, 7, 9, 11, and 12 times tables.

In English we will be looking at poems and letter writing. As a class we will be reading and discussing a range of poem genres such as Haiku and kenning. Later on in the term we will be looking at formal letter writing and how we form such letters.

In science our focus will be on states of matter. We will be identifying the features and characteristics of solids, liquids and gasses. There will be a highly practical focus during our lessons this term as we begin to learn more about each state and how they can be altered under different conditions.

During our art lessons we will be focusing on self portraits and the human face. We will be looking closely at how we can use our sketching techniques to draw different facial features. By the end of the term, the school is planning on having a self-portrait of each child completed. All of this work will be then displayed in a school art exhibition.

Thank you for all of your hard work last term and for making me feel very welcome.

Welcome back! – Autumn Term 1

Welcome to Year 4!

We have an exciting term ahead of us as we sail the seas with the Vikings. We will be learning about where the Vikings came from and how they lived in day-to-day life. We will be particularly focusing on how the Vikings came to Britain.

In maths we will be looking at place value and how we form numbers. We will be looking at a range of ways in which we form 3 and 4 digit numbers in particular, and their value. Also we will be starting to think about our times tables and areas where we need to improve as individuals.

In English we will be discovering exciting myths and legends and how the Viking’s used myths as a form of entertainment. The main focus will be on the text Beowulf.

During our Science lessons we will be looking at the human body, with a special focus on teeth. We will learn about all of the vital organs that are in our bodies and the jobs that they carry out to keep us fit and healthy. I have a few exciting experiments up my sleeve which will hopefully enable us to have a greater understanding of the human digestive system and how sugar can damage our teeth.

On a more creative note, Art will be based around observational drawings and using different medians to represent objects. In music we are looking at rhythm and playing games to help us learn and practice our skills.

I am looking forward to working alongside all of you and can’t wait to see what we get up to.
